A missile centre is being built in Zielonka

A missile centre is being built in Zielonka 25.07.2019

In the premises of Wojskowe Zakłady Elektroniczne S.A. in Zielona, a member of the PGZ group, there has been an official inauguration of the Manufacturing and Service Centre of NSM Missiles. The investment is tied to the offset project, namely the acquisition of a Naval Missile Unit by the Polish Armed Forces.

The ceremony was attended by: Minister of National Defence Mariusz Błaszczak, President of the Management Board of PGZ S.A. Witold Słowik and President of the Board and CEO of WZE S.A. Przemysław Kowalczuk, PhD, Eng. The investment involves the construction of a complex of buildings with special equipment allowing for the production, servicing and certification of subsonic anti-ship manoeuvring missiles (naval strike missiles - NSM). The establishment of the centre is a part of the plan to establish new capabilities in the field of missile technology in the PGZ Capital Group. The value of the investment exceeds PLN 30 million.

- The missiles require periodic, comprehensive re-certification - disassembly, inspection and replacement of all necessary elements and advanced testing. All this is possible only at the factory level. Building such competences in our Group is an element of PGZ's expansion plan in the missile technology segment, both to secure the needs of the Armed Forces and to cooperate with other formations - said Witold Słowik, President of the Management Board of PGZ S.A.

WZE S.A. is a beneficiary of two offset agreements with a Norwegian company, Kongsberg, a manufacturer of NSM systems. As part of the execution of the first contract, the Company built and launched the Service and Configuration Management Support Centre for the NSM System. The second offset agreement provided for the creation of infrastructure for the so-called mid-life upgrade (MLU) and re-certification of NSM missiles used by the Naval Missile Unit. The assumption of this project is to secure the Naval Missile Unit in the field of combat readiness of NSM.

Acquisition of know-how in production and servicing of missiles and implementation of the centre's culture and work organisation in accordance with NATO standards will have a positive impact on the company's development in the areas of technical level, organisation and functioning. Manufacturing and technological lines, new skills of specialists and acquired experience will be an asset for potential new business initiatives in the Group related to missile technology.

Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace's Naval Strike Missile (NSM) is a 5th generation precision, subsonic anti-ship, long-range manoeuvring missile. They can also be used to combat land targets. The NSM has been selected by the Polish Armed Forces for use in coastal defence artillery installations. In 2008, the Ministry of National Defence and the Ministry of Economy signed contracts with Kongsberg for the supply of equipment for the Coastal Missile Squadron (NDR) of the 3rd Ship Flotilla, whose main weapons were to be NSM missiles. According to the contract, 12 missiles were purchased. In 2010, a contract was signed for the supply of additional 38 Naval Strike Missiles for Poland (36 missiles as stated in the option, and two intended for testing).

The Coastal Missile Squadron began its service in June 2013. On January 1, 2015 the Naval Missile Unit was formed in Siemirowice. It included the Coastal Missile Squadron. Additionally, the Second Coastal Missile Squadron was created and 24 more NSM missiles were ordered for the 2nd Squadron (including vehicles, launchers and radar).
